Know more about chrome semi-finished products

Chrome is a metal resistant to corrosion as well as tarnishing. It is tough but forgeable and malleable. In the periodic table, it can be found in the 6th subgroup.

The material is antiferromagnetic with a melting point at 2180K or 1907°C. After some time it dissolves in hydrochloric and sulphuric acid. Its name is derived from the greek word groma (colour) and is based on the multitude of its chemical bonds’ different colours which are often used as pigments in paints and varnishes. Chrome and its bonds are used for various industrial applications profiting from their durability.

Industrial applications

Alloying element in corrosion- and heat-resistant stainless steels and NE-alloys
Hard chrome-plating: surface treatment for wear protection
Catalyst: element used to enable or accelerate a specified and intended chemical reaction
Pigments in paints and varnishes
Chrome tanning: process used for leather manufacturing

In nature, chrome in its pure form is very rare. It is primarily extracted through surface mining as FeCr204 with a share of chrome of about 46%. This mineral was approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA), while other minerals like Ferchromide (~ 87%) or Grimaldiide (~ 61%) contain a larger share of chrome but are scarcely found in nature. About 100 different minerals containing chrome are known.
